We are a group of mental health therapists that wanted to create a resource for people to visit to get some help with coping with the distress during and after the 2024 election and politics in general.
To start, trauma is not a mental disorder itself. However, there are disorders that require a traumatic or stressful event(s), such as, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Acute Stress Disorder or Adjustment Disorder. And what some may perceive as stress compared to what others perceive as stress is often different. Some individuals have more intense physiological and psychological responses to stress and trauma. Some individuals have a tendency to have resiliency-like responses to stress/trauma, compared to others. There are many reasons for this, from genetic, to life experiences.
If the stressor or trauma event(s) are of political nature, an individual could say that they have political trauma. The term political trauma is not a diagnosable health condition. Neither is combat trauma, religious trauma, etc. Political Trauma is not a clinical term. However, given our societal strain related to the election(s), we are labeling it Political Trauma here at USPoliticalTrauma.com
